BETWEEN ART & SCIENCE

BETWEEN ART & SCIENCE

started with my parents, who as a young couple would visit various museums around Europe so they could take pictures of floral still life paintings. They soon started dreaming about buying these beautiful art works themselves, which however didn’t really fit their budget. Fortunately though, they came across a very good alternative: antique prints; just as unique and tasteful as the paintings they admired at the museums, also created by hand and available in many different styles.

My father started conducting research into antique prints and picture books, which eventually led to my mother opening her print shop M.E. Slavenburg in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 1977. Six years later she moved her shop to the heart of Utrecht, where for over 24 years aficionados would enjoy browsing through the antiquarian prints to their heart’s content. In the meantime, in 1995, I had started my own business in furniture restoration and, in antique prints. That same year I won the award for best Upcoming Enterpreneur of the Year.

Over the past twenty years my shop, located in the city centre of Haarlem, has undergone a major restyling. Gradually I shifted the focus from restoring furniture to selling prints. What once started out as a shop with one gorgeous print from my parents decorating the wall, has developed into an impressive collection of original prints. Each historical piece with its own captivating story to tell. My print collection

BETWEEN ART & SCIENCE

can best be compared with the science collection sold at the Teylers Museum (Art, Natural History and Science Museum) in Haarlem and the nature collection of Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (the National Museum of Natural History) in France.
